Best Dressed Home No. 01 - Mark D. Sikes

Each week, I will feature an exceptional design project that I dub the "Best Dressed Home", or BDH. I'm borrowing this idea from a designer I admire, Mark D. Sikes, that posts a weekly best dressed list of the fashion variety on his blog. (If you haven't checked it out, do!) So it seems only fitting to feature Mark's Hollywood Hills home as our inaugural BDH!

By way of a quick introduction, my first exposure to Mark's work came in 2012, when his Hollywood Hills home was featured on the cover of House Beautiful. Interestingly, Mark's background was in visual merchandising at Banana Republic - not interior design. However, he fluidly transitioned his career, by following his interests and clearly his talent too.

Mark's fashion background is evident in his interior design work. He composes rooms, by expertly layering textures, colors, patterns and dotting them all with his signature stripes and blue and white porcelain. His sensibility is classic and all-American, but the thing I love most about Mark's work is how he infuses spaces with optimism, kindness and openness. Although we haven't met, I've read his blog for years and feel the same warmth and relaxed style in his writing.

Lately, his work can be found on the pages of virtually all of the big shelter magazines, but I particularly enjoy thumbing through the pages of his recently published book, Beautiful. He has a gorgeous furniture line out in partnership with Soane Britain, a fabric line with Schumacher and his own clothing line (MDS Stripes) that is available on Moda Operandi. It's thrilling to see his career take off - selfishly, I welcome any excuse to see more of his happy design! XO, L
