Spring into Fall

Even in "season-less" California, fall is here, evidenced by a magnificent persimmon tree outside my window dotted in vibrant orange. Sunday morning, I collected an armful of ripe fruit and plopped them in an oversized, pale yellow bowl. I was immediately inspired. The contrast of the soft, spring-like yellow of the porcelain and the bold, rich orange of the fruit was unexpected and beautiful. The traditional fall palate is rich, jewel tones: complex greens, browns, burgundies, plums and rust. I adore this classic combination, but this fall I'm interested in a more vibrant, optimistic and lighter take on fall.

I'm inspired by a mix of the saturated autumnal colors with a hint of spring pastels, grounded by earthy, textural elements. You can achieve this look with a fresh coat of paint, a reupholstered occasional chair or simply picking some fruit and a spot of restyling. Try mixing pumpkin orange with mint green sofa and distressed, cognac leather or a deep plum with the palest, cotton candy pink against rattan or dark, emerald green with sky blue and seagrass.
